Waymark Archive

A celebration of British waymarks and the landscapes they guide us through.

About

Zine coming soon!

Waymark Archive is a project by Outlier, dedicated to documenting and celebrating the waymarks found across the UK’s footpaths, trails, and historic rights of way. Whilst some of these markers are standardized nationwide (such as the National Trails or the Coastal Paths), many are unique to specific regions, reflecting local history, culture, and identity through landscape.

Each one tells a story, embellishing local iconography, hand-painted symbols, or eye grabbing, considered typography. Within these small spaces are imprints of the ancient past and the people who’ve maintained these trails, in turn informing and shaping the land they continue to guide us through.

The aim of this project is to unite explorers, walkers, and those fascinated by how we navigate British landscapes, giving us opportunities to discover stories, heritage and overlooked design.
